few months ago, the newspapers published the news that David Beckham, the popular British soccer player and husband of Victoria Beckham suffers from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, an anxiety disorder that makes life more difficult. Reportedly, David is terrified of disorder, to the point of having to line up the cans of soda in the refrigerator and has more times to ensure they are in odd numbers.
to join him in the ranks of victims of OCD, there would be none other than Cameron Diaz, Justin Timberlake and Jessica Alba. In film, however, a splendid example of this disorder is represented by Jack Nicholson in the movie "Something has changed."
But what exactly is the DOC?
If All of us sometimes have the doubt that it has closed the car or turning off the gas and go back to check, for those who suffer from DOC this is the normal everyday life and painful, characterized by anxiety constant, concerns and thoughts are impossible to remove. Obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors become so excessive as to make daily life very complicated.
The OCD is an anxiety disorder then is characterized by uncontrollable thoughts, intrusive and persistent ( obsessions) and behaviors repetitive and ritualized that it feels obliged to put in place to reduce the anxiety caused by the thoughts (compulsions ). Those who suffer from DOC usually recognize that these thoughts and behaviors are irrational, but despite this, they feel unable to resist and break free.
The most common types of compulsions concern:
- Wash (in particular, take a shower or wash their hands)
- Check (locks, gas, money ...)
- count and put in order (count up to a certain number, to avoid certain numbers, put in order the things in a way which is fixed and unchangeable ...)
- Piling (whatever ...)
- Doubt and guilt (if everything is not perfect, something terrible will happen) [ in this case it may be pure obsession or with other types of compulsions]
Therapy for Obsessive Compulsive
effective treatments for OCD ranging from medication, self-help, the drug therapy.
What according to international guidelines and more effective is Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy .
In the case of DOC, this approach uses a special technique called " Exposure and response prevention .
This technique involves the face repeatedly and gradually the obsessions that disturb the subject, but do not implement those behaviors that generally takes to relieve anxiety (compulsions).
For example, if the obsession is represented by the fear of germs, the therapist may ask the subject, after proper preparation, to touch the handle of a public place and to avoid the washing of hands afterwards. In this way, the patient may experience such as anxiety related to not being able to wash will slowly fading alone and learn to have, thus, control of obsessions and compulsions.
in children are often present symptoms which may seem like those described in:
In some cases this is normal behavior, and typical developmental stages child development.
In others it is actually of DOC.
In others, there may be symptoms of other disorders such as Attention Deficit Disorder, Autism or Tourette's syndrome.
If they develop symptoms of DOC, particularly if suddenly, it is useful to require an examination of the throat swab culture, to highlight the presence of streptococcal infection called PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Streptococcol Infection), which is manifested with tics and repetitive behaviors.
Even in children as in adults, obsessions and compulsions create great discomfort and interfere with daily activities and held several hours of the day. Unlike adults, however, children may not perceive their thoughts and behaviors as excessive or irrational.
